Athlone and its environs are rich in history, it being the birth-place of Count John McCormack, the world famous tenor. It is the capital of the Irish Midlands and sits both sides of the River Shannon. South of the town lies the ancient monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise. The town bridge has its place in history as the spot of the famous Battle of 1691. The 13th. century Norman Castle still exists west of the bridge.

The River Shannon provides all the pleasures that any tourist can hope to enjoy. The surrounding lakes are the country's greatest asset with fishing, cruising, water sport activities and a variety of shore amenities.

There is a wealth of trout and course angling on the Westmeath lakes - Ennell, Owel, Derryvaragh, Lene, Lough Rea and the River Shannon. Lough Derryvaragh is familiar to school children as the lake in the mythological story - The Children of Lir - who are said to have spent 300 years in isolation on its waters.

The town itself and its environs offers a swimming pool, caravan facilities, tennis courts, pitch & putt, hunting, horse riding. Distances from: Dublin - 78 miles; Galway - 56 miles; Limerick - 75 miles; Mullingar - 29 miles.

So whether to cruise or to fish; to recall mythology or visit monastic sites; to traverse Goldsmith's Country or take in the Fore Historic trail........ there is much, and indeed more, for the visitor to this part of ireland and we bid you welcome and wish you a fun-filled stay.
