the great artist, Michaelangelo. Christ Resurrected stands at the mouth of the tomb in the stark beauty into which he was born. I was only 17 years old when I first saw this work and our whole high school was obliged to view a documentary on the life of Michaelangelo and his works. I, inadvertently, viewing it some five times that day. To this day, however, this particular piece in question I have not seen again, yet its memory is forever embedded. It was the great "beauty" of Christ Resurrected, shaded in muted and mysterious tones of sepia, that captured my heart that day long ago. Over the years, in my search for God, consequent conversion and meditations upon my sins, it is this "beauty" that ever propelled me toward the Godhead. No amount of grief over my sins and failings could compare with the great beauty and mercy that was Christ's. That I now may join my own suffering, sins and failings to that of the Crucified is no small amount of wonder for me. It is for this reason that I now look forward to sharing in the Resurrection that awaits all who give their life to Christ - and him Crucified. |
