The Irish Conflict or the 'Troubles'
has produced a vast array of books all about the war in Northern Ireland.
These pages attempt to clarify what it is all about by suggesting some
reading material. Northern Ireland has lived with war since 1969.
On Good Friday 1998 a fragile peace was offered to the province by the
men of violence. We still await the blossoming of a true and lasting peace
sown so tentatively on that memorable day. Much has been written and I
have attempted to offer as balanced a selection of books as possible. There
are several pages in this section with links at the bottom of the listed
books.
Any
of the books listed can be bought
safely
and securely
by following the link to Amazon.com. I use Amazon for most of my book and
cd purchases and have not been disappointed. The names of the authors,
contributors and illustrators have all been linked to more of their work
on each page as well as being listed on our authors'
page.

Investigative
journalist Dillon focuses on the chaotic years of 196990 to describe how
British security forces attempted to infiltrate and destroy the Provisional
Irish Republican Army (IRA). The two sides fought a deadly, no-rules war
with spies, informers, assassination, misinformation, and wholesale coverup.
A chilling,
stomach-turning study of Northern Ireland's infamous Shankill Butchers,
a Loyalist gang of murderers who preyed on Belfast's Catholic population.
Investigative journalist Dillon, who published this account a decade ago
in Great Britain, describes the bloody handiwork of the Shankill Butchers.
The
Irish Times "An important work, containing
interviews and material as disturbing as they are significant."
Conor
Cruise O'Brien "Martin Dillon is
the greatest living authority on Irish terrorism."
Publishers
Weekly "Dillon has written an eye-opening
book about a sometimes incomprehensible sectarian situation."
Washington
Times Book Review
"...likely to become the reference work on the subject."
In
1991, McPhilemy produced "The Committee", a sensational documentary for
British television that alleged that members of the police and security
forces in Northern Ireland were colluding with Loyalist death squads and
the terrorist body that controlled them. Now he tells for the first time
the full stories behind the murders of Northern Ireland, the making of
the documentary, and his experiences since. 32 photos. Price:
$17.47
The
book tracks the I.R.A. from a time when it considered its war to be winnable
to an interim period when it combined the tactics of politcs and terror....
Taylor doesn't try to examine the psychology of those who took up the gun,
but he does capture the inevitability of that destiny for so many young
Catholics growing up in the dreary housing projects of Belfast.
Price:
$12.80
In
the 1980s, Conroy, a Chicago journalist, lived on the front lines of the
troubles in Northern Ireland, among the people most affected by the conflict.
This is his street-level view, vividly narrated. Originally published in
1987. With a new afterword written in the era of the IRA cease-fire.
Book
reviewer "This book is the best institutional history of the IRA and the
Republican movement I have come across. It illuminates very clearly the
dynamics of the conflict and the fundamental differences in perception
and misreading of the other sides by all parties that has made this such
a long war. "
A harrowing
portrait of the men and women of the IRA offers compelling portraits of
individual IRA leaders, discusses the roots of the conflict in Northern
Ireland, and examines the history and consequences of the organization's
war against Britain from a personal perspective.
Beresford
puts in human terms the conduct of an often frightful and inhumane struggle.
He makes the incomprehensible comprehensible; that is, he makes understandable
how ten men could face their own death, brought on by voluntary fasting,
even while watching their comrades waste and wither away.

$10.80
