In order for any business or organisation to meet its goals it must also sense, serve and satisfy customers' needs. The successful business will strive to maximise these goals by aiming for maximum consumption (sales) while at the same time offering consumer satisfaction and choice, and a more recent goal of ensuring quality of life in these times of awareness for ecology, fair employment and non-exploitation of workers.

Defining a Marketing Strategy

This requires analysis, planning and the implementation of programmes which will achieve the goals of the organisation. It is as important for the internet marketer to follow the same route that more traditional marketers have done for decades.

Analysis means 

  • deciding who your target market is 
  • researching to see if a market exists for your product or service 
  • looking at the existing marketplace for similar products or services 
  • comparing the pricing and strategy being adopted by competitors
Successful companies gain an edge by being innovative in production and promotion or by developing on a niche gap being missed by the competitors.

According to Mark Joyner, CEO Aesop Marketing Corporation:

"Marketing on the Internet is deadly serious.  If you aren't careful the Internet can drain your pockets of money faster than it can fill them.  No number of tips and tricks are going to make you successful on the Internet. The only thing that is going to make you successful on the Internet is the execution of a cohesive and deliberate system for delivering results."

Putting a Marketing Strategy in Place

We are all consumers and every one of us buys because of the benefit we will gain from our purchase. Even the most basic of goods like foodstuffs are bought based on a need or a want and on the benefit gained - to satisfy hunger, nutritional value, healthy food, to satisfy a 'sweet tooth', the 'feel-good-factor'.

As marketers, be it traditional retail or Internet, it is important to highlight the benefits to be gained by your customer for what it is you are selling or promoting. Always offer 'solutions to their problems' by telling your potential customer how your product or service will help or benefit them.

It makes no difference whether you are promoting or marketing through a well-designed web site, an email marketing strategy, a classified ads campaign, an article in an ezine or your own published ezine - you still need to promote the benefit. 

All of these should be considered as part of your marketing strategy and each one is covered in more detail in the relevant categories.
