Look for sites with a similar traffic throughput, send them an email, detail your own traffic and what benefits they have to gain by using your site. If your traffic is similar ask them to do a banner exchange with you. This system of exchange is known as bartering, one of the oldest marketing methods in the world. If you can't offer banner space because of the nature of your site then offer advertising space or a brief outline of their site and a text link. Try looking for smaller sites willing to accept your banner. The larger more popular sites will have placed a cost on their banner space. *********************************
