Pyramid Selling is banned in most countries and rightly so. With Pyramid selling a product is bought by A for $1 and sold to B for $1.10; B then sells it to C for $1.20 and C to D for $1.25. And so it goes. Multi-Level Marketing is the concept of teamwork selling the same product for the same price to people who in turn do the same thing. The customer pays the original price from the merchant or marketer. The team members gain by earning commission from the company on every sale and on the sales of the members they introduce into their team. Companies set their product price based on costs and profit margins. Included in the costs are the commission rates calculated for their distributors. In effect, their wages or salary had they been employed by the company as sales people.. If we were to be honest and logical about it and analyse this marketing concept we would see that Multi-Level Marketing is in fact another name for what most of us as marketers are doing anyway. ********************************* Comparisons With Other Marketing Techniques Let's just try to de-mystify it all by looking at some of the industries and see how their methods are no different. Take insurance companies for instance. They operate on field operatives gaining new business. If that operative introduces a new salesperson he gains a commission on the introduction and his/her sales. The only difference is that he/she is actually employed by the company. Affiliate programmes are all Multi-Level Marketing. As an affiliate commission is gained on any sales made, if one of those sales turns into another affiliate then a further percentage is paid from what they sell. Any type of good bought in the retail market operates as a form of Multi-Level Marketing, the only difference being the limit on the number of levels. The farmer grows, sells to the producer, who in turn sells to the supplier, who then sells to the retailer and eventually the customer is the last person in the chain.
