********************************* When I first started promoting my website I registered with every free links site I could find. That was only a few years ago and I got a reasonable amount of traffic from them. Eventually I found myself drowning in a sea of promotional mail set up as autoresponders from every owner of the FFA sites on the list. I stopped using them as more and more came on-line.Their effectiveness lessened by the day, often just the amount of time the site would stay listed. The principle of FFAs is for them to draw huge traffic to the site and for your site to be visible so that it would attract others. As more and more people started to use FFAs to promote their sites, the length of time it remained visible became shorter and shorter. I've even got automated emails back a half hour after registering telling me my link had expired!!!! ********************************* So why did I return to using FFAs? Well for three reasons. 1. The criteria set by some of the search engines before it will list sites is changing almost monthly. Some of the top search engines will rank sites based on popularity. By that I mean the number of other sites which have your site linked from them. I came across a great article by Mark Joyner, CEO, Aesop.Com, who told of a site where I could check out my site's popularity. He suggested using: Swiss Army Apps The site offers a free trial download that allows you to submit your site and check out its popularity. 2. Here's another great site that selects links sites based on the criteria you set it. These sites aren't those closely linked with the more popular and widely used FFAs that have become so common. So my site has a better chance of being seen. You can find that site here: Free Link Finder 3. Now this is where the bit of work comes in, but well worth the effort. Copy and paste the URL of every FFA site you register with into a new page on your site or in whichever word processing programme you use. Over time you will have built up a fine collection. Then upload the file into a HTML page. If you use a HTML editor such as Netscape Composer create each URL as an active link. Once you have your site registered on the FFAs on your list go to the Swiss Army Apps page and get it to spider your HTML page containing all the FFA URLs. Last step - once you have checked out your popularity ranking with the Swiss Army Apps and found it to be considerably higher than the first time you tried, it is time to hit the top search engines with your own URL. (We discuss these in the Search Engine category) ********************************* One last bit of advice when using FFA sites to register your own site. You will be asked for an email address. Get yourself a free email address in Snap or one of the other freebies, where you can collect your mail on-line. I find TheMail.com to be an excellent free email programme, especially since it actually pays uou for each new client who signs up with them. You get paid for every email they read - not bad eh? Use this email address when registering your site. It will free up your own personal email and allow you to go check out the offers or delete as you wish, and at your own time. *********************************
